The requirement in the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations to carry out a risk assessment for all work activities applies equally to the maintenance and use of work equipment.

All types of equipment used at work are subject to the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER)

Examples of equipment:


Self-propelled work equipment e.g. cranes, dumper truck, forklift trucks, elevating working platforms.

Lifting and access equipment e.g. ladders, elevating platforms, lifting equipment

Power tools and attachments e.g. drills, chainsaws, angle grinders, nail guns

Hand tools e.g. hammers, chisels, knives, saws, spanners

Machines e.g. rotating spindles, power presses, robotics and automated equipment, photo copying equipment

PUWER assessments cover risk analysis and risk evaluation that form part of the General Risk Assessment process.

To comply with the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) persons having control of work equipment, or who use or supervise or manage the use of work equipment must meet the general requirements:

  • Suitability of work equipment (Regulation 4)
  • Maintenance (Regulation 5)
  • Inspection (Regulation 6)
  • Specific risks (Regulation 7)
  • Information and instruction (Regulation 8)
  • Training (regulation 9)
  • Conformity with community requirements (Regulation 10)
